School Policy

The parents/guardians are responsible to read and comply with this policy and any information related to the school policy including information on bulletin board at the school and on this web-page.

Classes

Classes are priced and run accordingly to our school calendar. See our school calendar for details and events at http://www.ssballet.ca/Calendar.

Class placement, advancement and promotions

SSofB reserves the right to determine the class level for every student. Placement is determined by the instructors and the Director.
Returning students shall register for the class level recommended at the time of registration. New students in the leveled classes will be evaluated in an audition trial class and placed accordingly. Students are required to attend all assigned classes according to level and placement. Class placement is for the entire academy year: however, occasionally, changes in placement will be made and SSofB reserves the right to make placement changes it deems necessary.

Advancement criteria for the SSofB is based on the following:
Attendance: Students are expected to attend every class for which they are scheduled. Students or a parent/guardian must
report all absences to the school by email or phone prior to class time. See attendance policy below. Students who let attendance drop may jeopardize their placement in the School.

Technical skill development in relationship to class level. Included as part of the student’s technical accomplishments are:
proper alignment and placement, use of turn-out, physical strength, coordination, classical line, musicality, cleanliness, and clarity of movements and positions, movement quality and performing skills (in class, rehearsals and on stage).
Positive attitude: Students must bring to class a positive attitude so they will develop a good working relationship with instructors and other students, showing a willingness to receive corrections and comments from the instructors.
Promotions: Students are promoted on an individual basis. Unlike an academic school, some levels may take upwards of 2 years before being promoted to the next level. This is normal and does not have a negative connotation. Students will be promoted to a higher level as determined by, and at the sole discretion of the Director and the faculty.

Student evaluations: These are made by the dancer’s instructors.

Point class placement

Pointe work is an extension of ballet. Students who are 11 years old will only be able to go en pointe if they are able to do so safely, without risking injury to the growing bones and joints. To ensure our student’s safety, students must be enrolled in a minimum of 2 ballet classes:
a) Adequate flexibility of the foot and ankle to allow the student
to align the bones of the foot with the tibia (“get over their arches”) when on pointe.

b) Adequate strength of the foot, ankle, leg and torso to sustain the pull-up required.

c) Adequate turnout and strength of the turnout muscles to sustain proper alignment.

d) General physical maturity that indicates stability in the development of the bones and joints.

Dancers who successfully meet all of these requirements will minimize the likelihood of injury, will progress more rapidly, and will find the work less difficult. It is our belief that this very conservative approach is in the best interest of the student’s long-
term career and health.

Attendance and Punctuality

Arriving at classes on time is very important for all age groups. Coming to class 5 or 10 minutes late is destructive and unfair to the learning process. A student who is more than 15 minutes late may be asked to observe the class. This is to reduce the risk of potential injury from missing the warm-up. Attendance is very important as multiple absences can impact a student's progress as well as the other progress of other students in class as group dances are choreographed during each recital semester. Please arrive 10 minutes before class so that students can prepare for it.

We hope you don't miss any classes, but of course we know things can come. If a student is unable to attend class for any reason, the parent/guardian is responsible for notifying the school via email at ssofb@icloud.com  or telephone or other means of communication. If the parent/guardian fails to notify the school, we will record this as an unexcused absence. If there are more than four unexcused absences, the student can be excluded from participating in the school production. The school reserves the right to suspend any student with more than six unexcused absences. If a student is suspended, tuition and other payments or missed classes will not be refunded. Due to the high level of ballet classes, regular attendance is mandatory. We at Starchevski School of Ballet thank all parents and guardians for their understanding and support in this matter.

Class makeup policy

There are no refunds for missed classes. However, all our students are encouraged to makeup the missed classes in the same or lower level if the class is available. Makeup classes are good for one month before they expire. The student or parent/guardian is asked to email the school to schedule make up class.

Conduct and commitment

It is understood that student will reserve his/her time to commit to SSofB classes and performances. Participating in other activities which are in conflict with classes or performances may result in student being dismissed from the school. The school has rights to suspend any student, when the director concludes that a student is disobedient or the behavior of a student has a harmful effect on a person; or a student fails to comply with the school policy. If a student is suspended there will be no refund for the tuition and any other payments.
